QUICK READ

What changed

Mojang and Nintendo will release a native Nintendo Switch 2 version of Minecraft on October 27. It enables Vibrant Visuals by default, updates the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack for that visual mode and supports carrying worlds over from the Nintendo Switch version. Nintendo also describes a time-limited digital upgrade path for existing owners.

Why it matters

Existing owners need to distinguish the free Standard Edition path for eligible digital copies from the discounted Ultimate Collection prompt offered more broadly. The launch also changes how newly purchased Minecoins work on Nintendo systems, while online play and cross-platform play still have separate account and subscription requirements.

What is confirmed

  • The native Nintendo Switch 2 version is scheduled for October 27, 2026.
  • Vibrant Visuals is enabled by default, but it is unavailable in split-screen and some Marketplace worlds and content.
  • Nintendo Switch worlds can be carried over to the Nintendo Switch 2 version.
  • Eligible digital Nintendo Switch owners can upgrade to the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition for free in most territories through January 31, 2027; Japan and Taiwan use small regional fees instead.
  • Cross-platform play requires a Microsoft account, and online multiplayer requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • Minecoins bought on a Nintendo device from October 27 onward stay within the Nintendo ecosystem; coins owned before that date move to a cross-platform Legacy Wallet on compatible devices.

What to verify next

  • Check your regional Nintendo Store and whether your current copy is digital or physical before assuming which upgrade offer applies.
  • Follow the in-game upgrade prompt and official transfer instructions rather than deleting or replacing the existing Switch installation early.
  • Do not infer a frame-rate or resolution target: the cited launch information does not publish one.
  • Check whether your preferred split-screen or Marketplace content supports Vibrant Visuals before treating the visual mode as universal.
